Climate & Weather in Dominica

Humid tropical marine, Dominica is characterized by little seasonal variation in temperatures and strong, steady trade winds. The seasonality of rainfall has lead to the dry season and a rainy season, December/January being the driest, June/July the wettest.
Temperature ranges are slight. Average daytime temperatures generally vary from 26 C in January to 32 C in June. Diurnal ranges are usually no greater than 3 C in most places, but temperatures dipping to 13 C on the highest peaks are not uncommon.

Politics of Dominica

Dominica's capital is Roseau. And the government is democratically elected.
Politics of Dominica takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Dominica is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the House of Assembly. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
A president and prime minister make up the executive branch. Nominated by the prime minister in consultation with the leader of the opposition party, the president is elected for a 5-year term by the parliament.
The second important city after the capital is Portsmouth, located on north east of Dominica. Some other important cities are Carib Territory, Marigot and Grand Bay.


 

Dominica Language

English is the official language of Dominica. The much of the population also speak kwéyòl (Creole) - a French-based patois (although in the north-east villages of Marigot and Wesley you might also hear a pidgin English called 'cocoy').


 

Dominica Geography

Dominica has been described as one of the most beautiful countries in the world and protected by UN. For the distracted observer, this impression is immediately confirmed from the first sighting of the Island. Nestled between the French Islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, this "Nature Isle" is located in unparalleled natural beauty, a rich Creole culture, and the friendliest people in the World.
It is a rugged island noted for its mountains, rivers and waterfalls. It has managed to retain its natural beauty more than any other Caribbean island. Dominica is home to the second largest boiling lake in the world.
With an area of 751 sq km, it is the fourth largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean. It has a population of about 72,000. Dominica is also home to the last Carib population in the Caribbean.

Dominica Economy

Dominica's economy is substantially based on agriculture, although in recent years great strides have been made on diversification into tourism and offshore services.
Diving, Kayaking, whale and dolphin watching and cruising are among the bests.
Bananas is Dominica's principal export. Dominica's traditional market for its bananas is the United Kingdom; but bananas traditional industry in Dominica has been under attack recently.
Currency is EC Dollar, but US Dollar is widely accepted. Each EC Dollar is about 2.67 US Dollar. (Figure shown here is just for general information). The currency is then stand stronger than some Middle Eastern currencies such as Rial or UAE Dirham


 

Dominica Telecommunications

Dominica has a very modern telecommunication system. It holds the position in the Guiness Book of World Records as being the first country in the world to establish a fully digital system. The telecommunications providers are Cable & Wireless (Dominica) Ltd., Orange Telecoms, Digicel, SAT Telecoms and Marpin Telecoms and Broadcasting Ltd.


 

Dominica History

Dominica was re-discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 but most of its early colonial history was spent changing hands between the French and the English. Although the French finally lost control to the English in 1776, their influence is still strong, principally through the French Creole language which most islanders speak, the dominance of the Roman Catholic church and numerous place names.
Dominica became independent in 1978 and is a member of the British Commonwealth. It is also a member of the United Nations, Organization of American States (OAS), the Caribbean Community and a number of other regional and international organizations.


 

Other Information

American Airline (American Eagle) and Liat Air have daily direct flights to Dominica. Moreover, few other airlines such as Air Canada, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, U.S.Airways, Lufthansa and Air Jamaica have daily flights to nearby international airports that can be connected to Dominica with short flights by Air Taxis or Liat couple of times on a daily basis.
Dominica hosts major carnivals and festivals throughout the year that provide a series of exciting activities.
